National Running Day is June 3; Twin Cities events scheduled Print
Written by Amy Leger

This Wednesday is the first-ever National Running Day. You could celebrate it on your own, I suppose, but why do that when the Twin Cities will have a handful of simultaneous events held in Minneapolis and St. Paul that evening!

The idea for National Running Day is to get people out and just try running. According to the website, “If you’ve never run before, June 3 is the perfect day to start. There’s no minimum distance required.” The site offers suggestions on getting started, running with your children or even running with older parents or grandparents.

National Running Day came together as a collaboration of businesses in the running industry to “…nationally and locally promote running as a healthy, easy, and accessible form of exercise.” And it’s not just the running industry that’s touting the benefits of the sport. So is the medical community. In an online article, Fairview Hospitals explained the benefits of running or jogging:

“The benefits of running fall into two categories: physical and psychological. Physical benefits include weight loss, decreased cholesterol, decreased blood pressure, and increased endurance. Running can also reduce the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity, and certain types of cancer. Psychological benefits of running include decreased anxiety, decreased depression, and improved self-esteem.”

In the Twin Cities, there are six free, fun run events happening at 6:00 p.m. on June 3rd. They are scheduled to happen at:

Marathon Sports, Minneapolis

Kenwood Park, Minneapolis

Life Time Fitness, St. Louis Park

Life Time Fitness, Highland Park (St. Paul)

Running Room, Grand Avenue (St. Paul)

Como Park Lakeside Pavilion, St. Paul

There are many groups across the country that are taking part in this big running event.  I even found one for my hometown of Little Falls, Minnesota! If you want to search for another group that might be having an event closer to you, you can check it out on the National Running Day Participation page.
