On May 31st, Team Ortho held its big Minneapolis Marathon at the Depot. I did the 13.1-mile half marathon and it was great! True confession: it was my first half marathon -- so I didn't know really what to expect. Here's a quick description of the course. It began in downtown Minneapolis near the Depot and the first part was a 4 to 5 mile loop from downtown over the Mississippi River, along the east side of the river then back over and into downtown again. The rest of the course went along the west side of the Mississippi. The scenery was fantastic! The river, trees, parks the course was beautiful. The other nice thing was that there were a lot of water stops. It was nice because I didn't have to carry a drink with me. The hills were the only downside for me, but they were "doable" (although I could really feel those hills in my legs the next day). For me, I think, the long gradual hill at the 7 mile mark was harder than doing two shorter and steeper ones right before the finish.
The other wierd thing is that the half marathon finish was about a tenth of a mile after the full marathon's finish line. So many half marathoners, including me, got a little confused when we sped up for the fantastic finish -- and then were told we had to keep going! "What!?!?" I remember saying. But finish we did! Overall I really loved it! I think the gals I ran with enjoyed it too. We all said we liked it enough that we said we'd do it again -- hopefully it will happen next year!
